This is so beautifully written. As a history enthusiast, I really appreciate how well you’ve merged the points. I think in Kenya we’re often too quick to express disdain for certain communities, and unfortunately, that gets passed down to the next generation as if it’s normal. I completely agree with you—an entire community should never be blamed for the mistakes of a few. We need to make a conscious effort not to perpetuate hate or misinformation, because left unchecked, it can escalate into something as devastating as genocide
This... tracks. Like why the Somali struggled to gain IDs after turning 18 even though some are born and raised in Nairobi and, the very obvious under development in NE. I knew the history, but just vaguely through school History classes. Thanks for expanding on this
I always see how somalis look out for each other i cannot blame or feel enraged by any favourism they extend for each other because they live in a country where everyone is tribalistic against the.Sorry to every kenyan somali citizen who has to endure this
Thanks Kimemia for this insightful piece, I found myself reeling back to the fact that indeed knowledge is power in the sense that, when the political class are plotting to gain power, during the 2013-2022 Regime issuing of Ids to the Somali community was never even mentioned, nobody talked about it but now that its of significance to them, it now is being used as a strategy to
gain more power. If more Kenyans extended grace and kindness to this community, we would pose a stronger front against the oppression by the political class.
I’m so glad I found a substack written by someone who understands the historical background of the conflict.
My pleasure. Thankyou for reading

The symptoms of today’s tensions were always there. we just keep forgetting, until it caught up with us, like a bad cyst.

Such an insightful piece
This was a brilliant piece. A great summarization of the Somali in Kenya. From past to present.
This was such an eye opener I didn’t know shit about Somalis apart from the little in social studies class. Thankyou
